SpongeBob and Patrick are dying to join Johnny Krill's extreme sports team. As a result, the following season, which was originally intended to premiere in 2014, was delayed to 2016. The biggest reason for this is because the season halted production midway through (between " SpongeBob You're Fired" and " Lost in Bikini Bottom") to complete production on The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. Notably, it is the longest-running season of the show, spanning over the course of over five years, which also makes it the longest-running season of any Nicktoon (or any American cartoon, for that matter). The season began on Jwith the episode "Extreme Spots" and ended on Februwith the episode "Goodbye Krabby Patty?". Prior to this season, only two episodes had been produced in widescreen - " Truth or Square" in Season 6, and " It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" in the previous season.
